WAVES Typewriter Activity

When WAVES began working, one of their many tasks was to transcribe notes or important documents. This was done with a typewriter. With this activity, you too can “type” just like the WAVES!

Supplies

• Adult shoebox
• Long tissue box or small box
• Paper towel tube
• Old newspaper
• Paint and paintbrush
• Glue or tape
• Glue dots
• Printed type writer keyboard (provided)
• Large bottle caps, such as those from a juice bottle

Instructions 

1. Glue the shoebox lid to the shoebox. Glue the tissue box lengthwise on the short side of the shoe box. Let the glue dry.
2. Lay the old newspaper down on the ground to catch any paint. Paint the body of the typewriter and the paper towel tube. Let the paint dry before completing the next step.
3. Glue the large bottle caps to the ends of the paper towel tube. Let dry.
4. Using the glue dots, put a glue dot on each end of the tissue box where the paper towel tube will sit. Make sure to only use the glue dot on the ends as the printer paper must be able to slip underneath.
5. Glue the printed typewriter keyboard onto the typewriter.
6. Slip the printer paper under the type writer tube. If you would like, you can tape the ends of the paper together so that it doesn’t fall over.
7. Now you can type, just like the WAVES!
