WAVES Diorama Activity

The WAVES lived very busy lives. While in training, they rose early to go to class. After class, they exercised and studied. In the evenings and on the weekends, the WAVES could attend parties or play games. Often, they sang songs, performed plays, and talked with each other. In this activity, design a scene from the day in the life of a WAVE. The following instructions are just one way to do this project! Change the project anyway you feel like and get creative!

Supplies

• Cardboard
• Markers
• Colored paper
• Various pieces from the recycling bin, crafting supplies and toys
• Cardstock

Instructions

1. Using a piece of cardboard, make a background for your WAVES diorama. You can draw a scene with markers or use pieces of paper to make bushes, buildings and furniture.
2. Using pieces from your recycling bin, supplies from your crafting box or small toys, make props to go in your diorama. Here are a few ideas:
• Use an old match box as a bed and pieces of fabric for the bed spread and pillow.
• Draw a miniature recruitment poster to hang up in the WAVES’ room.
• Glue some yarn onto a piece of cardboard to make a rug
• Paint a tea box to make a desk. Cut a toilet paper tube in half (with an adult’s help!) to use as a chair.
• What else can you come up with?
3. On a piece of cardstock paper, draw and color WAVES paper dolls. With an adult’s help, cut them out.
4. Now you’ve created a fun diorama to play with!
