Episode 97: The Original Hideaway

Richard Dermer’s Hideaway is one of the biggest hotspots in Stillwater and has become an even bigger part of many people’s memories of Oklahoma State University. What started as a student-run small pizza business quickly evolved into a large Oklahoma-based restaurant chain with locations even in Arkansas and Texas.  While he didn’t open the original pizza parlor, it was only in 1957 after Dermer’s acquisition that The Hideaway earned its name and business truly began to take off. But how did it become such an integral part of Oklahoma and OSU history? Why do so many alumni and students alike flock there during big games and OSU-related events? And what exactly makes the Stillwater location different than every other Hideaway, even down to the owners?

Today, we’ll look at the student-run roots of the infamous Hideaway, and how it quickly became a Stillwater staple. We’ll also hear from Stephanie Dermer-Breshear about defining Richard’s legacy and the type of role model he truly was.
