Beckie Bigler

Editor of "Public Information Officer" (2nd Edition)

Beckie Bigler has been an editor at Fire Protection Publications since 2017. She has a doctorate in Spanish and has taught both Spanish and English as a second language to students of all ages. She also worked as a Spanish editor for Saxon Publishers in Norman.

Beckie and her husband Ben have lived in the Edmond area for 20 years. They have two adult children, a senior Golden Retriever and a feisty orange tabby. Their daughter resides in Brooklyn, NY, and works in the film industry. Her son, a college junior, is pursuing a degree in Film and Media Studies. In addition to time with family and friends, Beckie loves travel, photo projects, crossword puzzles and an occasional 5K run.

She has collaborated on several FPP publications to date, including the third editions of "Marine Fire Fighting for Land-Based Firefighting and Structural Fire Fighting Initial Response Strategy and Tactics." She is currently the Lead Editor for "Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement, Ninth Edition."

The second edition of "Fire Protection Publications Public Information Officer" provides basic skills and awareness training for fire department PIOs. The purpose of this manual is to provide an overview of the skills and knowledge a PIO needs to perform the diverse and demanding tasks associated with this position. The manual prepares the PIO in training to meet the job performance requirements of NFPA 1035, Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer, Youth Firesetter Intervention Specialist and Youth Firesetter Program Manager Professional Qualifications (2015).

The scope of this manual addresses the PIO’s role in disseminating public information, increasing community preparedness, exercising social media responsibilities, and assisting the Incident Commander at an emergency scene. This manual discusses the PIO’s relationship with internal and external stakeholders, as well as opportunities to strengthen this relationship through community outreach and public information programs. Other topics include relevant laws/policies, effective written and public speaking skills, and how to work successfully with the media.
