Linda Austin

Linda Austin is a professor of English at Oklahoma State University and the author of “Automatism and Creative Acts in the Age of New Psychology.” She works in 19th century literature and culture, mostly in Great Britain, and specifically with intersections between physiology, literature, and the fine arts. Currently, Austin is studying 20th century assessments of genius and creativity and contemporary poetics.

“Automatism and Creative Acts in the Age of New Psychology” links efforts to establish standards of artistic practice with challenges to the idea of human exceptionalism. Beginning with the pressing late nineteenth-century question, "Are We Automata?" the book explores ways in which the idea of automatism shaped ballet, landscape photography, literature, and professional writing.
