Karin Schestokat

Originally from Germany, Karin Schestokat is a professor of German in the Department of Languages and Literatures and currently the department head. After getting a Staatsexamen in English and History from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany, she obtained a master’s of art in German Studies from the University of New Mexico and a doctorate degree in German Literature along with a certificate in Studies of Women and Men from the University of Southern California. Since coming to Oklahoma State University, she has been teaching all levels of German, from beginning language instruction to advanced literature and culture courses.

Her research is focused on German women – minority – writers. She has published a book on German Women in Cameroon, Travelogues from Colonial Times, and is working on a book-length study of women’s flights from Kaliningrad at the end of World War II. She also published articles on Yoko Tawada, May Ayim, African-Germans in Germany, Stefanie Zweig and on Monika Maron. For the last eight years, her work has shifted to language instruction and she co-authored the textbook “Denk Mal” for intermediate German instruction. The 3rd edition of “Denk Mal” has just been published.

“Denk Mal! Deutsch ohne Grenzen,” now in its 3rd edition, is a textbook for teaching intermediate level students of German, co-authored by Karin Schestokat, Tobias Barske, Megan McKinstry and Jane Sokolosky. It blends engaging texts, rich cultural presentations, innovative technology and contemporary short movies in a ground-breaking new program that is designed to engage and intrigue intermediate students of German.
