Jiri Lebl

Jiri was born in Prague, then Czechoslovakia, and moved to the United States in early teens with his family. While in college, Jiri was involved in the free software movement, working on the GNOME desktop environment for Linux.

This led to working in the software industry for a short period before going back to graduate school. After finishing a doctorate degree in mathematics at the University of California, San Diego, and three postdocs, among them University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Wisconsin-Madison, Jiri was hired by the Mathematics department at Oklahoma State University.

Jiri has written more than 30 peer-reviewed research papers in complex analysis. Besides research, Jiri has always been passionate about affordability of university education, especially for underrepresented groups and the developing world, and started writing freely accessible textbooks while teaching those courses for the last decade.

He has written four such textbooks, a differential equations textbook, two volumes for a full year course on real analysis, and a graduate-level textbook in his field of complex analysis. He has been continually updating and improving the books both in response to feedback and his own teaching.

“Basic Analysis II: Introduction to Real Analysis” Volume II extends the treatment of analysis to multivariable topics, suitable for a second-semester real analysis course such as OSU's Advanced Calculus II. Topics covered are differential calculus in several variables, path integrals, multivariable integrals and function approximation. It is a free textbook, meaning the PDF is freely available online, although a hardcopy is also available.
