co-author and editor of "They’re All Writers: Teaching peer tutoring in the elementary writing center"

Dr. Jennifer Sanders is a literacy faculty member and the school head of the School of Teaching, Learning & Educational Sciences at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Sanders’ academic passions are developing teachers’ knowledge of effective writing instruction and supporting the literacy learning of underserved students in high-needs communities.

She taught elementary school in rural, high poverty schools in Florida and has worked with urban schools in Oklahoma, Mexico and Belize. Dr. Sanders’ research focuses on K-12 writing instruction, writing center pedagogy, teachers’ professional development and representations of diversity in children’s literature.

In 2017, Teachers College Press and the National Writing Project co-published Dr. Sanders and Dr. Rebecca Damron’s book titled “They’re All Writers: Teaching peer tutoring in the elementary writing center.” Her work in multicultural/diverse children’s literature includes service as former chair of the Notable Books for a Global Society awards and service on the Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts award committee. Her earlier scholarship on the relationship between artistic and written composing processes of children is published in a co-edited book titled “Literacies, the Arts, and Multimodality.”

“They're All Writers” helps teachers explore the power of writing centers. In elementary school classrooms across the country, writing instruction - not grammar worksheets or spelling drills - is still the neglected “R.” In this book, classroom teachers will find foundational information about the writing process with everything they need to begin and facilitate a peer tutoring writing center. Student-led writing centers harness the social and instructional power of students working and learning together, and this book includes specific lessons to teach students how to be effective peer tutors and how to be better writers.
