G. Michael Grammer

G. Michael Grammer is a professor at Oklahoma State University where he holds the Chesapeake Energy Endowed Chair of Petroleum Geology. Mike received his doctorate degree in 1991 from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and specializes in carbonate depositional systems and reservoirs with an emphasis on application to both hydrocarbon reservoirs and carbon dioxide sequestration. He has been a distinguished lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and was recently awarded the John M. Shelton Best Publication Award from AAPG and the AAPG Distinguished Educator Award.

He has published extensively, including as lead editor of both AAPG Memoir 80 “Integration of Outcrop and Modern Analogs in Reservoir Modeling” which won AAPG’s Robert H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award, as well as Geological Society of America Special Publication 531 entitled “Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin.”

Before joining OSU in 2012, he was on the faculty at the University of Miami/RSMAS and Western Michigan University. His research group includes 7-10 masters and doctoral students, undergraduate and post-doctoral researchers. His students have been lead author or co-author on over 35 publications and presented over 100 papers at regional, national and international conferences over the last 10 years.

The Michigan Basin is a classic intracratonic basin that has played a significant role in the fundamental understanding of geological processes in such basins, and has been an important resource for oil and gas, economic minerals, groundwater and coal. Despite the classic nature of the Michigan Basin, there has not been a special volume dedicated to the Basin in nearly 25 years.

Since that time, new advancements in the geological sciences, particularly the utilization of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and 3D geostatistical modeling, have led to a new and more comprehensive understanding of the Paleozoic sedimentary packages of the Michigan Basin. This volume provides significant new insights of the Michigan Basin to both academic and applied geoscientists by combining a series of papers that discuss various aspects of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of key units within the basin as well as the diverse distribution of natural resources present in this basin.
