Creative Studios hits 1,000th 3D printing certification

The OSU Library recently marked an impressive milestone. The Creative Studios certified the thousandth 3D printing users since launching the service in 2016.

The 3D printers have become a popular service of the Creative Studios, and a part of fire protection engineer major, Levi Hoffman’s creative journey.

“I wanted to print and create objects that I envisioned in my mind,” Hoffman said. “Instead of denying an idea because I wouldn’t be able to create it, I entertained the idea and moved forward in the manufacturing process.”

The 3D printers can create simple items such as the guitar hook Hoffman created or complex items such as a Halo helmet. Creative Studios intern Keji Muoa said the helmet is one of the most creative things he’s seen someone make.

Shannon Austin, who has managed Creative Studios since it opened, makes sure the studios provide a welcoming environment for students to explore their creativity and offers a simple certification process for 3D printing.

Unlike other 3D printing spaces on campus, the Creative Studios are open to anyone affiliated with OSU, regardless of major or college. The certification process takes less than an hour, and use of the 3D printers is offered at no additional cost.
