2020 Undergraduate Library Research Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2020 Undergraduate Library Research Award, presented by the Oklahoma State University Library, include Claire Ringer, Gabhriel Barber, Seraiah Coe and Zoe Siebert.

The award is designed to recognize and encourage outstanding research on behalf of undergraduate students at OSU. In each category, the winners are awarded $1,500 and honorable mentions receive $750.

Upperclassman ULRA winner, Claire Ringer, conducted her research project on the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service Program (WAVES). She completed the work using OSU’s extensive WAVES collection. Ringer’s project explores these women, their training and how the lives that they led reflected American society in the 1940s.

Underclassman ULRA winner, Gabhriel Barber’s, project focused on the growing global issue of antibiotic resistance. Barber’s experiment explored E. anophelisis’s resistance to the beta-lactam class of antibiotics, namely kanamycin.

Honorable mention upperclassman recipient, Seraiah Coe’s, project addresses the increase of free-range cat populations that draw concerns to public health and biodiversity conservation. Coe’s research presents an understanding of the effectiveness of the trap-neuter-release method in smaller towns such as Stillwater.

Honorable mention underclassman recipient, Zoe Siebert’s, project focuses on explaining the underlying mechanisms of plants under pathogen infection to explain the contribution of amino acids for plant effector-triggered immunity (ETI). The overall effort of the project is to observe if the direct increase of amino acids directly contributes to plant immunity during ETI.
