Virtual lecture explores race and gender online

The OSU Library is hosting a virtual lecture and Q&A with Dr. Safiya Noble on Nov. 4. The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. This lecture will explore the topics of race, gender and inequality within commercial digital media platforms.

Noble is an Associate Professor of Gender Studies and African American Studies at the University of California. She is the author of the best-selling book, "Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism," that challenges the idea that Google and other search engines give equal opportunity and representation to all races, genders and religions. Her work has been a critical component of library instruction.

Recently, Noble was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, recognizing her efforts in justice and equality. She is also a recipient of a Hellman Fellowship and the UCLA Early Career Award. Her research is timely and primarily centers around the design of various digital media platforms. Noble's work is both interdisciplinary and sociological, tackling issues of implicit and explicit bias against race, gender, culture and technology.

Her work and studies are frequently quoted in several esteemed academic journals and advisory boards including The Guardian, the BBC, CNN International, USA Today, Wired, Time, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and the New York Times. Her  most popular writings critique the loss of public goods to Big Tech companies and is featured in Noema magazine. Noble is also the co-editor of two edited volumes: The Intersectional Internet: Race, Sex, Culture and Class Online and Emotions, Technology and Design.
