Library to host 9th annual Plants, People and Beyond lecture

Dr. Lena Struwe discusses the good, the bad and the ugly facts about medicinal plants

Dr. Lena Struwe, Director of the Chrysler Herbarium and professor at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University, will present at the ninth annual Plants, People and Beyond: Library-Plant Biology Lecture. Her lecture, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Facts About Medicinal Plants,” will be held in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library, on Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m.

Struwe is an internationally-known plant biologist who teaches evolution, medical plants and botany, and plant systematics at Rutgers University. During her presentation, she will discuss the history of medicinal plans and how they are used today. Struwe will also cover the underlying risks involved in medicinal plants, including the fine line between therapeutic and lethal doses.

“We invited Dr. Struwe because she is an engaging speaker who is a creative educator and researcher,” said Dr. Linda Watson, professor in the Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution. “She has won many teaching awards.”

Plants, People and Beyond is an annual lecture series sponsored by the OSU Library and the Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution. The lectures explore the interaction between people and plants.

The event is co-sponsored by the OSU Botanical Society and the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Oklahoma Native Plant Society, and is free and open to the public. For more information, contact lib-pub@okstate.edu or 405-744-7331.
