Great War Series to Explore History of U.S. Foreign Aid

Dr. Julia Irwin to discuss the development of the American Red Cross and other relief agencies during World War I

“The Great War & Its Legacy, 1914-1918” will continue at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library. Dr. Julia Irwin will present “A Great Humanitarian Adventure: The American Red Cross and U.S. Foreign Relations During the First World War Era.”

Irwin is an expert on the history of the American Red Cross and other relief agencies that began during World War I. Her presentation will highlight these agencies and discuss how WWI led to the rise of relief agencies that still play an important role in the world. The lecture will focus on the American Red Cross, its volunteers, and how they played a key role in delivering U.S. humanitarian assistance during WWI.

“The program will be of great interest to all those interested in the development of the relief agencies upon which we depend during wartime and in natural and other disasters,” said David Oberhelman, W.P. Wood Professor of Library Services and coordinator of the Great War series.

Irwin will also give a more in-depth presentation over these relief agencies and their development at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 in the Library Events Room, 109H. In this lecture, Irwin will discuss how many relief agencies in the United States were founded, as well as how they have developed over time.

“The Great War and Its Legacy, 1914-1918” memorializes the centennial of WWI by highlighting the War’s worldwide impact on life and culture. The series is made possible through funding from the OSU Library and the Wood Professorship for Library Science. Related events are free and open to the public.
